“Flying Saw” a High-Flying Path to Better Reliability

Company officials educate public through media about restoration process

Little Rock, Ark. – Entergy Arkansas, Inc. is looking to the sky to help solve a very down-to-earth problem – keeping the power on.

Entergy Arkansas contracts with Aerial Solutions, Incorporated out of Tabor City, North Carolina to assist with right-of-way vegetation management.

Aerial Solutions put on a demonstration at an event today near Little Rock to educate the public through the media about the challenges and innovative solutions associated with right-of-way vegetation management.

“Keeping our rights-of-way clear of vegetation, such as tree limbs, plays a crucial role in the reliability of the service we provide, especially in a major storm,” said Brady Aldy, Entergy Arkansas’s director of Distribution Operations

A typical Aerial Solutions Air Saw crew can accomplish in a few hours what would take a ground based crew several days to accomplish, with minimum exposure to energized power lines.

The 800-pound, 24-horsepower saw consists of multiple 24-inch-diameter rotary blades and is suspended from a 90-foot vertical boom beneath the helicopter.

“This sophisticated equipment can reach the top of any tree – even those in challenging, remote areas such as swamps, hills, and mountains,” said Aldy. “By trimming tree branches now, we better ensure our customers do not experience a vegetation-related outage during good or bad weather.”

Entergy is the only utility in the nation to win the top awards from the Edison Electric Institute for emergency response or emergency assistance 11 years in a row.
